Overview

Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) refers to the uniform nomenclature of seven Armed Police Forces of the Union of India under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Their role is to defend the national interest mainly against internal threats. The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are seven security forces in India that are overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs: Assam Rifles (AR), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Security Guard (NSG), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Each of the seven has its own cadre of officers, but they are all led by Indian Police Service officers.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

⦿ The Central Reserve Police Force’s mission is to enable the government to effectively and efficiently maintain Rule of Law, Public Order, and Internal Security, as well as to preserve national integrity and promote social harmony and development by upholding the supremacy of the Constitution.

Border Security Force (BSF)

⦿ BSF is a Border Guarding Force, it is a paramilitary force charged with guarding India’s land borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The BSF has air wing, marine wing, an artillery regiment, and commando units. It currently stands as the world’s largest border guarding force. BSF has been termed as the First Line of Defence of Indian Territories

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

⦿ The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is the country’s premier multi-skilled security agency, tasked with providing security to the country’s major critical infrastructure installations in a variety of areas. CISF currently provides security for nuclear installations, space establishments, airports, seaports, power plants, sensitive government buildings, and heritage monuments.

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

⦿ The sole goal of achieving ‘Total security preparedness’ in remote border areas in order to perform a’stay-behind’ role in the event of a war.” SSB is now spread across Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh’s international border.

Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

⦿ The ITBP is a specialized mountain force, with the majority of officers and men being professionally trained mountaineers and skiers. ITBP has carried out numerous rescue and relief operations across the country as the first responder to natural disasters.

National Security Guard (NSG)

⦿ The National Security Guard (NSG) is an anti-terrorist force. As a Federal Contingency Force, the National Security Guard has been tasked with dealing with all aspects of terrorism in any part of the country. It is a task-oriented force with two complementary elements: the Special Action Group (SAG), which consists of Army personnel, and the Special Ranger Groups (SRG), which consists of personnel drawn from Central Armed Police Forces/State Police Forces.

Railway Protection Force (RPF)

⦿ Railway Protection Force (RPF) is one of the security forces of India. It is tasked with protecting property and passengers of the Indian Railways. It is the only Central Armed Police Force(CAPF) with powers similar to regular state police forces. They perform many roles including the provision of internal security under the control of the army through the conduct of counterinsurgency and border security operations, provision of aid to the civilians in times of emergency, and the provision of communications, medical assistance and education in remote areas.

⦿ Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) performs a multidimentional role like protecting the borders of the nation from external aggression & infiltration, aiding in internal security in combating insurgency, anti-naxalism and counter terrorism.

⦿ They assist the civil population in various development programs, community policing programs and disaster management.

Work Description

⦿ Other Functions include Counter Insurgency Operations, Anti Naxal Operations, Internal Security Duties, VIP Protection, Lead Intelligence Agency, Security To Diplomatic Missions Abroad, UN Peacekeeping Operations, Disaster Management, Civic Action Nodal agency for UN Police Missions, etc.

Cons
⦿  Being CAPF can be dangerous as they risk their lives during the tasks.

⦿  Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have to perform duties in snow bound areas, in desert tracts and in jungle terrain, depending on the border they are deployed at.

⦿ Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel have to work in snow-bound areas round the year; there are hardly any peace stations for them.

⦿  The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel can be over-stretched and on the move most of the time.
