The Indian Statistical Service is part of the executive branch of the Indian government’s Group-A Central Civil Services. It is a governmental service with a high level of statistical knowledge and application. With the primary goal of creating high-quality official statistics using improved methodologies and procedures, as well as providing solutions to data and information demands, as well as interpretation and analysis. A majority portion of the probationary training programme is to be devoted to acquiring of technical knowledge in the field of official statistics, economics, financial statistics, survey methodology etc.Recruitment in Indian statistical Service is done through UPSC examination.
⦿ Junior Statistical Officer(JSO)- are engaged in data collection from selected households/enterprises etc. both from Urban and Rural areas by personally visiting them through well designed schedules. Senior Statistical Officer(SS0)- posted in Ministries/Departments/Organizations other than NSO (FOD) are carrying out day-to-day statistical functions of the Ministries/Department/Organisation as per work assigned to them.
⦿ Statistical Investigators are required to carry out data collection drives and numerous surveys in regards to price indexes, urban surveys, socio-economic factors, governmental schemes, and programs.A Statistical Investigator officer posted in a Ministry has to work in a clerical profile, draft documents, prepare survey report requirements, data entry, tabulation, edit and compile existing data into reports, and other similar responsibilities.

⦿ Clearing a combined competitive examination for recruitment to Grade IV officers of the services of ISS conducted by UPSC.
